Frequently asked questions.

What does the $150 cover?

One listing for one horse, live until it sells. That includes up to 8 photos plus a YouTube or Vimeo video, an upcoming-shows section so buyers can watch your horse go in person, unlimited edits, and zero commission when you sell. On most show horses that’s a fraction of one percent of the sale price.

There’s no subscription and nothing to renew. Have a promo code? Enter it on the Stripe checkout page.

What does “live until sold” mean in practice?

Your listing stays up with no expiration date for as long as the horse is for sale. When you have a deal in progress, mark it Sale Pending; when it’s done, mark it Sold. Both stay visible with a badge — buyers like seeing that horses actually sell here.

We may check in now and then to make sure older listings are still for sale, so the site stays trustworthy for buyers.

How do I mark my horse Sale Pending or Sold?

Sign in and open My Listings. Each live listing has Mark sale pending and Mark sold buttons. If a deal falls through, use Back on the market — no extra charge, ever.

Which breeds and divisions can I list?

The Exchange is the marketplace for the Saddlebred show world: American Saddlebreds plus the horses and ponies shown alongside them. Choose the breed or type first — American Saddlebred, Hackney Horse, Hackney Pony, Harness Pony, Roadster Horse, Roadster Pony, Other / Open Breed — then the primary division you’d market the horse in. Each breed has its own list.

Does your horse fit more than one? Add up to 4 “Also suitable for” divisions. Buyers filtering by any of them will find your listing; horses listed with that division as their primary show first. Breed locks at go-live. Divisions are about how you market the horse, so you can change the primary division and “Also suitable for” anytime — say, a Three-Gaited horse remarketed for Show Pleasure.

Can I change my listing after it’s live?

Anytime, free. From My Listings you can update the price, description, breeding, location, contact details, primary and “Also suitable for” divisions, video, photos and upcoming shows. Changes show up right away.

Why are some fields locked?

Once a listing goes live, the barn/show name, registered name, year foaled, sex and breed lock. That keeps one paid listing tied to one horse, so nobody can swap in a different horse and reuse the slot — which protects every seller’s investment and keeps buyers’ trust.

Divisions aren’t locked: they’re about how you market the horse, so you can change the primary division or “Also suitable for” anytime from My Listings.

What makes good listing photos?
  • Add 1–8 photos. Your primary photo is the one buyers see first in search results and in link previews on Facebook and texts — make it your best.
  • Shoot in good, even daylight, with the horse clean, tacked or turned out the way you’d show them.
  • Include a clear side view (conformation), a show or action shot, and a head shot.
  • Hold the phone horizontal for action shots. No need to resize — we shrink photos on your phone before uploading, so even barn wifi can keep up.
  • Use photos you took or have permission to use (ask your show photographer).
How do buyers contact sellers?

Directly. Every listing shows the barn’s or trainer’s phone and email, with one-tap Call and Email buttons on phones. We’re not a broker: we don’t sit in the middle of conversations, take a commission, or handle money for the horse.

Does the Exchange check horses or sellers?

No. Sellers write their own listings and promise they’re accurate, but we don’t inspect horses or verify papers. Buyers should do the usual homework — pre-purchase exam, papers, references. We’ll remove listings that are fraudulent or misleading; if something looks wrong, email sammc@thesaddlebredexchange.com.

What’s the refund policy?

The listing fee is non-refundable once your listing is published — it’s live the moment payment clears. Edits are free forever, so you can always fix things. If a payment went through but your listing didn’t go live, email us and we’ll make it right. Details are in our Terms.

Do buyers need an account?

No. Browsing and contacting sellers is free and needs no account. Sellers create a free account (email and password) so they can manage their listings.
